Pebble Foot Mat

Wine Bottle Border
How long it takes to prep for this one depends on whether you "collect" the bottles yourself or hit the recycling bins for treasure. Once you have the core materials you'll need to get your hands on a trowel and a padded kneeler. Douglas Welch the author of A Gardener's Notebook blog put together a great YouTube tutorial that will take you through the process.
You don't have to be the outdoorsy type to enjoy the outdoorsy look. If you would prefer not to get your hands dirty check out our Accessories and Accents collection.

A Home Office Can Be Rustic Too
Since you are here reading this blog we'll go out on a limb and guess that you hate modern office furniture; black faux leather chairs, glass desks with brushed steel legs, a pendulum clacking away on the desk--all the warmth of an icebox. Just because big office supply stores specialize in that stuff doesn't mean that you are stuck with an office that is more burr that beautiful.
A desk: the center piece of any office
You want a desk that will last not a Swedish click-together piece. We suggest our Blue Mesa desk, designed to weather years of successful business and blend with the ranch furniture adorning the rest of your home. Its a mix of new and old, mission style with a felt lined tray, two outlet power strip and ball bearing extension guides for easy open and close drawers.
Brawny and Beautiful
The Blue Mesa is made from a beautifully finished oak veneer over high quality hardwood. And the surface of the desk is detailed with a stand out slate tile inlay. While you are looking down on all the beauty and working hard you'll need a nice place to sit--a matching, ergonomic office chair for instance.

Decorating With Sound: Part Three
Light dancing on the wall. Warmth emanating. Fire touches the senses and sound is no exception. The crackle and roar of fire is music to our ears, so here are a few suggestions for making the most of its unique tune.
Tune in with the right wood
Not all wood types play the same. Cedar for instance is an excellent choice because of its composition. Full of resin that expands and pops, Cedar produces a strong original sound. You will need a good screen to protect against the sparks and embers so be sure to check out our selection of fire tending tools. They are functional and are sure to spark decorating ideas for both indoor and outdoor fireplaces.
Chime in with Chimenea
A Chimenea is a southwestern fire pot make from clay or metal. They are affordable and easily storable and a great way to maximize the sound qualities of fire. The hollow shape of the pot can help amplify the sound of your fire. Before purchasing a chimenea make sure the manufacturer treated it with a sealant. And always remember to cover your chimenea when not in use so that it doesn't accumulate rainwater.
Fake? Don't worry we won't tell
You don't need a fireplace to enjoy the sounds of fire. Kracklebox plays high quality digital recordings of wood fires allowing you to relax to the sounds of a crackling fire without having to build one.

Eco-Friendly Rustic Furnishing
Reclaimed wood is environmentally friendly and marked with the kind of character that rustic home furnishing lovers covet. Tough and weather resistant, reclaimed wood is popular in outdoor settings as the chief material in high-end garden and patio chairs. It is also a reliable and depended on wood for use in agricultural settings where the natural elements soak in and enhance the charm of the material. Every piece of furniture made with reclaimed wood comes with a story and beautiful hints about its history. Our teak divan is a wonderful example. It is made from old teak lumber with a genuine ox yoke used to give the frame extra support. Where that ox yoke came from and the stories soaked into are up to you to decide, but we promise the details will inspire you.

Decorating with Sound: Part Two
In our initial post about decorating with sound we focused on wind. Today we are going to look at another earth element: water. The soothng sounds of trickling water can be unobtrusively added to your rustic room design through the use of a small desktop or wall fountain. Finding a fountain to fit your personality and your room is easy. But, there are a few tricks you'll want to apply in order to maximize the use of sound.
- Obstacles in the water flow can positively effect sound. Try a stair-step design to create a tinkling, splashing noise.
- If you chose a fountain that splashes outside the basin (purposely or on accident) try placing it on a tile floor. A spa-style master bath for instance.
- If you have pets consider a wall-mounted fountain installed high enough that guests don't mistake it for a drinking fountain!
- You can avoid mineral buildup by using distilled water. Click here for additional care tips.
- Make sure the water flows towards the place you using sit in the room.
- Keep fresh water in the fountain.
- Use an odd number of stones for good luck.

The Story of Colorado and The Lone Star
It may seem odd to buy Lone Star themed home decorations from a Colorado furniture store. But, the two great states may have more in common than you think.
Their geography and weather are vastly different. Colorado has more than 100 mountain peaks in the 14,000 foot elevation range and Texas is primarily broad sweeping plains. Texas is hot--like crazy hades hot with humidity to boot. Colorado is considerably cooler. To Colorado natives snow is a welcome part of the winter season. To Texans snow is a sign to hunker down for the storm.
While different on the surface, Colorado and Texas are inexorably linked in the history and development of the American West.
The Republic of Texas claimed a huge swath of territory after winning independence from Mexico in 1836. That territory included parts of Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico and Wyoming. Mirabeau B. Lamar, a prominent Texan politico at the time publicly stated his desire to expand the borders of Texas clear to the Pacific Ocean. As we know, he didn't get his wish.
Still... Almost two hundred years later when people think about the American West and the images that define it, they think about the open plains of Texas and the great Rocky Mountains bursting from the continent inside the borders of Colorado.
We are from Colorado, but we feature rustic home furnishings based on the themes and regions of the entire American West. Of all our regional offerings none is more popular than our Lone Star Flag!

Wind Chimes: A Natural Symphony
Primarily used in outdoor living spaces, wind powered chimes can provide a soothing backyard experience or a melodic note before entering your home.Tubular chimes from Woodstock Chimes are perfectly tuned with rich, deep tones. - Homemade chimes will suffer wear-and-tear. Seashells for instance have a shelf life, so be prepared to do repairs.
- For greater longevity hang your chimes under the eaves of the house but far enough away that they don't bang against the siding.
- Use a hook so your chimes are easy to take down if it gets a bit too windy.
- DO NOT use a leather cord. They look nice but they rot quickly in the sun.

Is That a Canoe in Your Living Room?
"Yes, it is a canoe. Do you love it?"
"You know, I really do!"
Home furnishing accessories come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and styles; modern, classic, rustic and in the case of our mini birch canoe, irreverent. The detailing is fantastic and the craftsmanship is top-notch. It is fun. It is a conversation starter. But, it is also a well-made piece that might just stay in your family home for years.
Keep in mind that "mini" is a relative term. This is a not a china cabinet canoe, it is more than six and half feet long. They will ask, but don't let the kids take it for a spin around the pond. This vessel isn't caulked with pine gum like the Native American relics that inspired it. What it can do is accent your rustic themed room as a stand alone piece or as storage for displayable objects that don't fit into the dimensions of standard shelving.

Distressing? As in a cause for concern?
Well that depends...
The technique designers use to give new furniture an old time look and feel is called "distressing." Its good fun for furniture lovers. Not so much for furniture.
Home furnishings don't age into antique perfection. They age into boring out-of-date relics. You could try to renovate them young again, but why not go even older? Nick, scrape, cut, wax and sand them. Distress them in the name of rustic beauty.

Three Easy Ways to Distress Furniture:
- Paint your furniture (wood or metal) with one color of latex paint and then rub wax on the areas where natural wear and tear would occur. Paint again with a different color and scrub the paint from the waxed areas allowing the bottom coat to show through.
- Get your hands on gears and a bike chain. Mark the surface of the wood with the teeth of the gears and thrash the wood with the chain to add random markings. Then apply a stain that will be absorbed most heavily by the marred wood while yellowing the remaining areas slightly.
- Rough up the surface of painted furniture with sandpaper. Add specks of stain that look like embedded dirt or paint droplets by flicking a lightly dipped paintbrush. Finish with a clear topcoat to preserve your new/old finish.

How to Care for Rustic Leather Furniture
If you love high quality ranch furniture you no doubt have considered leather upholstery. And you no doubt have a friend who has warned you that leather can be difficult to upkeep. Your friend is wrong. Leather is extremely durable and if handled correctly it will last for decades. Naturally, keeping leather away from rain and heavy moisture is a must and keeping it away from direct light can help avoid fading over time.
Leather has Character
Leather upholstery will change color and texture over the years. This is a good thing. Like the perfect pair of jeans, leather furniture gets softer and more comfortable with use. What could look more rustic than a leather chair or sofa that has aged gracefully?
How to Care for Your Leather
All our leather ranch furniture is color corrected and finished with an acrylic top coat to protect the dye and limit scratches while keeping the leather supple. These preventative measures make your furniture easy to care for.

- Use the crevice cleaner attachment on your vacuum to get into the creases between the cushions. "Did I really eat that?" Yes, you did.
- If you spill anything liquid on the leather wipe it off immediately.
- Use professional leather stain removal products. Leather does not get along with soap and water.

Old-Timey Bear Decor
Do you like your cabin antiques to be a little dinged-up? Etched with details that seem to reflect a bygone era? Yeah, so do we. A great way to give your cabin a rustic antique feel is with a wood panel sign, knots and irregularities included.
This vintage sign was carefully crafted with colors and fonts to make it look like a wall hanging from a 1930's lodge and its made from the kind of wood that probably had claw marks on the bark. Plus, you can choose your own wording to make your sign as unique as the room it adorns!

How to Give Cabin Interiors a Roomy Feel
Cabin interiors often use dark wood and dark paints which can make a room seem smaller than it is. Throw in seasonal clutter and your favorite rustic relaxation spot can quickly go from comfy to cramped. Here are a few ways to boost the perceived open space in your wilderness home:
Decorate with Clutter
Stuffing all of your clutter into a closet will quickly free up floor space...until it all comes spilling out the next time you need to retrieve an umbrella or a pair of boots. Instead incorporate frequently used items into your decorative plan. A coat tree, hat rack or shoe shelf can add to the cabin feel of your home, while keeping needed items handy.
Avoid Large Wall Hangings
Use smaller artwork to add variety and open space to your walls. For instance by arranging photographs into clusters you can maximize negative space and give depth to the room. If you do choose to go with a larger wall hanging make sure that it is a light color, this is especially true if you have wood panelled walls or walls painted in darker tones.
Use Light Liberally
What do sconces, floor lamps, and pendant lighting have in common? They give atmosphere to the areas they shine on. And they allow you to tailor the lighting in the room to fit your current mood. Bright and sunny or dark and introspective? Use your creativity when choosing your lighting options. An old-fashioned Coleman lantern might be perfect for your entryway. While the kitchen and living room may require something equally rustic but a bit more substantial.

Whimsical Home Furnishings
Put down the window cleaner. Step away from the glass coffee table. Walk away. We both know that table will never stay clean; fingerprints, condensation rings, dried crusty food bits, it's a magnet for crud of all varieties.
Why not get something that is both unique and built to last? Our antique Victorian sled is whimsical, unconventional and in no way a crud collector. Harking back to the early 1900's this gorgeous coffee table alternative features metal runners and a deep red finish that makes it look like an heirloom passed down.
Let the kids loose. Bring on the fingerprints. Use it as a coffee table or as a decorative piece. This sled is durable enough to become an heirloom after all!

Turquoise: Greatness is in the Details
Fashion, architecture and furniture can be considered works of art. They can also be considered clothing, shelter, storage; the basic necessities. The difference between basic and grand is typically in the materials and craftsmanship. But, sometimes the thing that tips them towards greatness is smaller, a detail, an accessory.
The San Juan collection is made with the best materials and the finest craftsmanship; 100 year old oak, wrought iron hardware. But in our opinion it is the turquoise inlay that gives this line its flare and memorability. You may think of turquoise as the stuff of jangly bracelets and gaudy necklaces, but in the San Juan collection the semi-precious stone is used subtlety and beautifully to add contrast to the deep oak brown.

Warm Up Your Winter With Color
The sun may be hibernating but you don't have to. Decorate your home in defiance of the winter gloom by making it bright and sunny and happy. We are not suggesting that you pour sand on the carpet, blow-up an inflatable palm tree and pretend you're at the beach. But, by following these decorative tips you might just add warmth to those cold winter nights:
Paint? Who Needs It?:
Sure the walls need to be painted, but who wants to do that during winter when you can't ventilate without freezing? Trying hanging a large tapestry as a wall accent. A bit of woven art can add warmth and style to any room.
Stained Glass = A Glass Half Full:
The dark hues of autumn have past and the bright colors of spring are a long way off, but there is no need to wait for the seasons to brighten up your life. A stained glass table lamp will splash an array of color across the room. Winter got you down? Flip a switch and let happiness shine!
Add Color You Can Sink Into:
Jewel tones are the ideal antidote to winter gloom. Throw pillows and blankets in ruby red, midnight blue and forest green can be mixed in with chocolate brown to provide a lovely and diverse palate. With comfy textile choices like microfiber, suedine and chenille, who wants to get up and go outside?
Nip all you want Jack Frost. It's bright and warm in here.

The Angle of Relaxation
A good night's sleep is all about the angles. And your favorite Colorado furniture store has all the angles covered. Introducing the Simplicity Adjustable Bed!

An adjustable bed provides not only physical therapy, but mental therapy too. Well, kind of. Snoring can be a real drag on your relationship, but with the right angle your spouse's grizzly bear rumblings will be reduced to soft exhales.
One more thing. Just a small thing. The Simplicity Adjustable Bed gives a great massage. Forget paying a stranger in a strange place to work out the kinks. Go home, lie down and let Simplicity go to work!

The New Year is a Perfect Excuse to Redecorate

Hoof It:
Horseshoes provide an inexpensive way to add rustic flare to any room. You could buy new shoes. But, if you have the time to look for something antique you should. Better yet if you have horses or know someone who does, take shoes straight from the hoof. Horseshoe wall decorations can be as easy as hanging a nail. You can also link them together in an oval shape using copper wire. For a splash of color use leather thongs to attach dried flowers.
Dream a Little Dream:
Arts and crafts projects can be a great way to spend the indoor hours during the winter. Yes, you could tackle that big quilt project you've threatening for years. Or you could start smaller. Insure that your naps are sweet and light by making your own dream catcher. You can find step-by-step instructions here or for more ambitious dream catcher ideas click here. What better way to redecorate than with your own art!
Fun with Lighting
The holidays bring lights of every color and then they get packed away leaving us months and months bare bulbs and soft white. To give your room a polished thematic look choose a perfect fit from our lighting collection. For the kids room or a laundry room with a bulb hanging from the ceiling get creative. Punched tin from an old metal can, can be used to create a lampshade with a country feel.
Good luck filling that empty space. And keep reading for more decorating ideas!

Whimsical Home Furnishing Accessories
Glass coffee tables seem to be more trouble than they are worth. If you have ever owned one of these tables you know they are constantly having fingerprints smeared all over the glass. Toddlers like to be rough with their toys, so there is always a possibility of having the table break. It’s time to get a coffee table that’s not made out of glass, but instead made to last.
This antique Victorian sled would fit right in. It’s durable and invites playfulness. It won’t matter if your kids climb or play rough with this coffee table. This gorgeous wooden sled has metal runners and a red finish that evokes winters long gone. You might even tell people you named it “Rosebud”…

Hibernate at Home!
Our Bear Valley
Sofa is built for the rigors of family life. Spills happen. Couch jumping
happens. Shoes on the couch happen. Sturdy and durable the Bear Valley Sofa is
a statement piece that lasts.
What makes
the bear motif special? In certain Native American tribes the bear was a symbol
of strength, power and courage. And maybe more importantly the bear
symbolized the fierce protectiveness of motherhood. The bear motif moves beyond
comfort and durability. It helps set a warm and nurturing mood in the room—a space
for families to nestle together feeling warm and safe.
The Bear
Valley Sofa is constructed of high quality materials including Duracushion
seats. Ventilated and reversible Duracushion seats give you double the life and
the chance to change things up from time-to- time. The warranty on the frame
and components is also top-tier. We strongly believe protecting our customers
when they invest in our rustic
home furnishings.
A living
room comfortable enough to hibernate in sounds nice, doesn’t it? The Bear
Valley Sofa can get you there!
